Understanding VA Disability Rates
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) provides compensation to veterans who have disabilities or illnesses incurred or aggravated during military service. The amount of compensation is determined by the veteran's combined disability rating, which is calculated using a specific VA formula, and the number of dependents the veteran has.
What is the VA Disability Rating System?
The VA rates disabilities on a scale from 0% to 100% in increments of 10%. A rating of 0% means the condition does not affect your earning capacity or is not service-connected. A rating of 100% means the condition is totally disabling. Ratings are assigned based on diagnostic codes and guidelines outlined in the VA Schedule for Rating Disabilities (VASRD).
How is the Combined Disability Rating Calculated?
The VA uses a unique formula to combine multiple service-connected disability ratings. It does not simply add the percentages together. Instead, it considers the highest rating first, then applies subsequent ratings to the remaining percentage of disability. This ensures that the combined rating reflects the total impact on a veteran's earning potential.
The formula is as follows:
Combined Rating = 100 – [(100 – R1) * (100 – R2) * (100 – R3) * …] / 100(n-1)
Where R1, R2, R3… are the individual disability ratings in descending order, and 'n' is the number of ratings.
For example, if a veteran has ratings of 60%, 40%, and 10%:
1. Start with the highest rating: 60%
2. Calculate the remaining disability: 100% – 60% = 40%
3. Apply the next highest rating (40%) to the remaining percentage: 40% of 40% = 16%
4. Calculate the new remaining disability: 40% – 16% = 24%
5. Apply the next rating (10%) to the remaining percentage: 10% of 24% = 2.4%
6. Add all applicable percentages: 60% + 16% + 2.4% = 78.4%
7. The VA rounds this to the nearest 10%, so 78.4% becomes 80%.

Dependent Benefits
Veterans with a disability rating of 30% or higher may receive additional monthly compensation for dependents. Dependents include a spouse, children under 18, and parents if they are dependent on the veteran. The calculator estimates these add-ons.
Aid and Attendance (A&A) and Housebound Benefits
Veterans who are severely disabled and require the assistance of another person for daily tasks (Aid and Attendance) or are permanently bedridden or housebound may be eligible for additional benefits beyond the standard compensation rates. These are typically added to the 100% disability rate and are not automatically included in the base calculation.
How to Use This VA Disability Rates Calculator
- Enter Individual Ratings: Input the percentage rating for each of your service-connected conditions into the respective fields (Condition 1, Condition 2, etc.). If you have more than three conditions, focus on the highest three as they have the most impact on the combined rating.
- Specify Dependents: Use the dropdown menu to select the number of dependents you have (spouse, children, dependent parents). This will adjust the estimated compensation if your combined rating is 30% or higher.
- Calculate: Click the "Calculate Compensation" button.
- View Results: The calculator will display your estimated combined disability rating and the corresponding monthly compensation amount. It will also show the base rate and any estimated dependent add-on.
- Reset: If you need to start over or make changes, click the "Reset" button.
- Copy: Use the "Copy Results" button to quickly copy the calculated values for your records.
Important Note: This calculator provides an estimation based on current (2023) VA compensation rates. It does not guarantee eligibility or the exact amount you will receive. For official figures, always consult the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Key Factors Affecting Your VA Disability Compensation
- Combined Disability Rating: This is the most significant factor. Higher combined ratings result in substantially higher monthly payments.
- Number of Dependents: Having a spouse, children, or dependent parents can increase your monthly compensation, provided your combined rating is 30% or higher.
- Severity of Conditions: The VA rates conditions based on their severity and impact on your ability to work and function. More severe conditions receive higher ratings.
- Effective Date: The date your claim was filed often determines the effective date of your benefits, influencing how much back pay you might receive.
- Specific Diagnostic Codes: The VASRD assigns specific codes and criteria for each condition, influencing how it's rated.
- Aid and Attendance (A&A) or Housebound Status: Eligibility for these special benefits can significantly increase the total monthly compensation for severely disabled veterans.
- VA Compensation Rate Changes: The VA adjusts its compensation rates annually based on the cost of living.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
The VA publishes official compensation rates annually. For 2023, a 100% disabled veteran without dependents receives $3,685.04 per month. These rates increase with dependents and are updated each year.
No, the VA uses a specific formula that does not simply add percentages. It prioritizes the highest rating and calculates subsequent ratings based on the remaining disability percentage.
While you can list all your conditions, the VA's combined rating formula gives diminishing returns for additional conditions after the highest ones. This calculator focuses on the top three for simplicity, as they usually determine the combined rating.
You can claim a spouse, dependent children (under 18, or over 18 if still in school or permanently incapable of self-support), and dependent parents. The calculator allows for up to 10 dependents for illustrative purposes beyond a basic spouse+children structure.
To receive monetary compensation, a veteran generally needs a combined disability rating of 10% or higher.
Yes, your rating can change if your condition improves or worsens, or if new evidence emerges. The VA periodically reviews ratings, especially for temporary or future-evaluation disabilities.
No, the base calculation does not automatically include Aid & Attendance (A&A) or Housebound benefits. These are special monthly compensation (SMC) add-ons for veterans with severe needs and require a separate application and eligibility determination by the VA.
You can find the most up-to-date official rates on the Department of Veterans Affairs website or by contacting a VA representative.
